Next year, Indonesia is expected to become the fifth largest copper cathode producer in the world, with the operation of PT Freeport Indonesia's (PTFI) new smelter in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Gresik, East Java and PT Amman Mineral Internasional Tbk (AMMAN) in Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara, which are part of downstream efforts.

The target, from these two large companies, Indonesia can produce up to 1.5 million tons of copper cathode per year. Thus, Indonesia will occupy an important position in the global copper market. Currently, copper cathode production from PT Freeport Indonesia's smelter reaches 1 million tons per year.

In 2023, China was the largest supplier of copper cathodes in the world, reaching 12 million tons per year. Followed by Chile as the world's second largest copper cathode producer with a production of 2 million tons per year, and Congo in third position with a production of 1.9 million tons per year. Meanwhile, the world's fourth and fifth largest cathode producers in 2023 are Japan and Russia, producing 1.5 and 1 million tons per year respectively.

Indonesia has a great opportunity to become a major player in the global copper industry, and can be achieved if the potential of undeveloped copper mines in Indonesia begins to be fully explored.
